As we approach the Shtiebel’s six-year anniversary, we’re taking a moment to pause and look back, with deep gratitude and curiosity, at the rich, layered history of Jewish life in South Philadelphia.

This new initiative honors the individuals, families, shuls, businesses, and organizations that shaped Jewish South Philly over generations.
You can find the first version of our Community Map displayed in the stairwell of the Shtiebel, a visual celebration of our communal past and present.
We have identified the locations of many shuls, businesses, organizations, and other places of significance in the history of the Jewish community in South Philadelphia that stretches deep into the 1800s.

We know there are many sites of shuls, businesses, organizations, individuals, and significant places that we have not yet identified, and we would like you to let us know what we are missing!
The map now hanging in the Shtiebel is a start, and is intended to be temporary.
Please share the names and locations of any shuls, organizations, businesses, or places that we do not yet have on our map yet!
Did your family live in South Philadelphia? Please share any locations or information on family you would like to include in this map.
Our goal is to collect the locations of the many sites we do not have on this map, and add them to this map.
Help Us Grow the Map
Do you know of a shul, business, organization, leader, or story that belongs on this map?
Did your family live in South Philly and have roots here you’d like to share?
Did we miss a place—or get something wrong?

We’d love your help to fill in the gaps, make corrections, and add new insights as we continue to grow this collective effort.

We plan to share an updated version of the map in time for Rosh HaShanah. Your contributions will help us get there.
