​We want to take a moment to illuminate the full landscape of volunteer leadership at the Shtiebel.  The South Philadelphia Shtiebel is held up by people in many different roles, each essential. In 5787, we have organized our volunteer structure into three distinct groups, each with its own purpose. These three groups create different pathways for engagement and leadership. Whether you're drawn to fiduciary stewardship, core operational functions, or leading something new, there's a place for you. We hope this clarity helps you find the right home for your gifts and passion.

The Governing Board holds fiduciary and legal responsibility for the Shtiebel. This working board thinks at the level of the whole organization: where we're headed, how we sustain ourselves, and how we remain accountable to the community. Board members partner closely with our clergy and staff around finances, legal and ethical compliance, fundraising, our physical home, and long-term strategy.

The Operations Council (formerly Advisory Board) owns the core, recurring functions that keep the Shtiebel running week to week: kitchen and kiddush, facilities, children's programming, security, hospitality, and more. Each Council member nurtures and leads one of these essential areas, staying coordinated with one another through regular meetings. This is volunteer leadership that directly supports our clergy and staff.

Project Leads (New!) guide our time-bound and emerging initiatives. Each project has a lead, a small team, defined goals, and its own timeline. Project teams meet as the work requires and move at their own pace. When a project matures into a permanent core function, it can graduate into an Operations Council portfolio.
